The latest news from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics notes that airfares jumped by nearly 5 percent in the first quarter of this year, which isn’t news to FareCompare readers as air travel analyst Rick Seaney revealed this trend back in March.
HIGHEST AIRFARE: CINCINNATI
5 Highest Average Airfare Cities
- Houston Bush
- Washington Dulles
LOWEST AIRFARE: ATLANTIC CITY
5 Lowest Average Airfare Cities
- Atlantic City
- Long Beach
- Las Vegas
LACK OF COMPETITION CITED
Cincinnati wins highest airfare honors due to lack of vigorous competition at the airport – interestingly, the same can be said of cheapest airport, Atlantic City.
However, while the vast majority of Cincinnati service is provided by the higher priced legacy carriers (and this is true of Memphis as well), Atlantic City is served only by rock-bottom discount carrier Spirit. As for Long Beach, it is served by a handful of airlines but has become a focus city for low-cost carrier JetBlue.
